About this piece

MASJ jewellery came out of a genuinely small operation — a husband-and-wife team, Edward Anthony and Maureen Ann Story-Jones, working from the village of Berriew in Montgomeryshire from 1984 onward, casting pieces in pewter before plating them in silver or gold. Their Silver Scenes range leaned heavily on nature — flowers, dragonflies, butterflies — which makes a cat brooch a slightly less typical subject, though the level of detail here is consistent with their usual output.

The cat sits with its back turned, watching through a window framed by an ornate foliate arch, a bit of narrative playfulness that suits a maker known for meticulous, hand-finished work rather than mass production. It's signed and dated to the reverse, 1990, which places it among the earlier pieces the company produced — MASJ stopped dating (and eventually signing) items after the early 2000s, so a hand-dated piece like this one carries a bit more collector interest than later, unsigned output.
