Why Antiques
Why should I buy an antique?
This may be the first time you've considered buying something that isn't brand new, and you may be wondering, "is this a good idea?"
Let us assure you: it most definitely is. Here are a few reasons why. After all, antiques are...
One of a kind, by definition.
Unique
What sets antique and vintage items apart from their modern equivalents is their rarity — the older the object, the smaller the group of people who own anything quite like it.
There are, of course, moments in life when distinctiveness isn't the priority (when buying a toaster, for example). But when you're after something with real presence — a gift that means something, a piece for a home that says something about you — finding an object that has survived centuries of wars, revolutions, and the odd pandemic to land safely in your hands makes for a far more memorable purchase.
Built before built-in obsolescence
Well Made
The minute humans built factories and started mass-producing everything, the quality of individual items fell drastically. Sleek, flat-packed furniture has its appeal, but it doesn't compare to custom-made, hand-carved oak that took guild-trained craftsmen years to complete. When you buy something made two hundred years ago, you know real skill and time went into its creation — and that it has already survived two centuries, with every chance of seeing out a few more.
The original recycling
Good for the Planet
In the UK, consumers throw away an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of bulky waste and furniture each year — much of it cheap, low-quality pieces that break or simply aren't worth the effort to resell. Buying an antique or vintage piece gives new life to a small slice of history, and helps keep the planet around a little longer — all for the price of a small teapot. We pack with recycled boxes wherever we can, and we're always looking for ways to do better.
Beauty that holds its worth
Valuable
Materials like silver and gold have a value set by the market. In times of economic uncertainty, the price of precious metals tends to rise, so if nothing else, your antiques double as rather lovely insurance.
