About this piece

A handsome vintage Indian export decorative box, crafted from richly figured Indian rosewood (sheesham) and finished with brass-bound corners and edging inspired by classic nineteenth-century campaign chests and travelling cases.

The wood runs warm through honey and chocolate tones, with grain that swirls enough to make each face of the box worth a second look, while the brass corner mounts, edging, and central cartouche stay understated enough not to compete with it. Clean, architectural lines keep the focus on the timber rather than the hardware, and the box adapts easily to whatever job you give it — jewellery, keepsakes, desk odds and ends, or simply left out to be looked at on a shelf or table.

Inside, the space is generous and uncluttered, the brass hinges move smoothly, and the lid sits flush when closed, which is more than can be said for a lot of boxes claiming campaign inspiration without the fit to back it up.

Condition notes

Presented in good vintage condition. The Indian rosewood displays a rich, warm patina that beautifully enhances its natural figuring. There is a faint area of colour variation visible on the lid, shown in the photographs, which blends naturally with the grain and is unobtrusive in normal display. The interior shows minor manufacturing finish marks beneath the lid, typical of Indian export craftsmanship of the period. One corner of the brass edging sits very slightly proud due to a missing fixing, although it remains secure and is only noticeable on close inspection. Overall, the box presents extremely well and makes a highly decorative and practical addition to the home.
