Toby jugs have carried a fairly consistent format since the 18th century — a seated or standing figure, usually male, doubling as a functional jug — but the "grotesque" style leans into exaggerated, almost caricatured features rather than the more genial expressions typical of the traditional form. This one shows a man in Georgian dress grimacing outright, arms set akimbo, a pose and expression clearly built for character over charm.
Burleigh Ware was the trade name used by Burgess and Leigh, a Burslem pottery with a long-running Staffordshire pedigree, and this jug dates to around the 1960's — well after the original 18th century Toby jug tradition, but part of a genuine revival interest in the form that ran through much of the 20th century. Grotesque Tobies like this were made specifically to stand out from the more standard, softer-featured versions still in wide production at the same time.
