About this piece
Commemorative jewellery around royal jubilees was never really a niche market — 1977 alone produced a genuine flood of it, everything from mugs to medals to pendants exactly like this one, as the whole country marked twenty-five years since Elizabeth II's accession. This particular piece keeps things restrained rather than gaudy: a round, openwork pendant, pierced and engraved with "EIIR," "Jubilee," and the two flanking dates, 1952 and 1977, doing the commemorative work through text and form rather than a printed portrait.
The pendant hangs from a rolo chain marked sterling, a simple, round-linked style that doesn't compete with the pendant for attention. Jubilee pieces like this occupy an interesting spot in collecting now, genuinely of their moment rather than a later reproduction, and specific enough in its dating that there's no ambiguity about when it was made.
