About this piece

Rococo revival ornament like this made a real comeback in dressing table silverware through the 20th century, long after the original 18th century style had fallen out of architectural fashion — scrolls, shells and foliage worked in relief across the lid, bordered with beading, giving the whole thing a density of detail that a plainer, more restrained design would lack. The lid is solid sterling silver with genuine heft to it, hallmarked for 1997 and made by Carr's of Sheffield, a firm with a long-standing reputation for fine silverware.

The crystal body comes from Atlantis, a Portuguese glassmaker producing crystal since 1944, and it's lined inside with black velvet, the kind of finishing touch that turns a functional container into something worth displaying rather than tucking away. A vacant shield cartouche sits at the centre of the lid, left blank for engraving — useful if you're buying this as a gift and want to personalise it before it's given.
