The colour variation on this trivet isn't hand-painted, it's a direct result of how the turquoise glaze pools and thins over a relief-moulded surface, sitting deeper and darker in the recessed areas of the pattern and thinner, paler over the raised parts. A rose, convolvulus and passion flower are worked into that moulded relief, so the shading comes entirely from the glaze technique rather than any additional colour applied by hand.
Minton & Hollins was a specialist offshoot of the main Minton firm, focused on architectural and encaustic tile production alongside pieces like this, which shares more in common with tile-making technique than standard hollow-ware ceramics. It's a substantial, practical object too, large enough to protect a table surface from a hot teapot rather than serving a purely decorative purpose.
