This case carries ribbon-figured mahogany throughout, with a vacant brass cartouche centred on the lid, left blank rather than engraved, ready for initials, a family crest, or whatever dedication its next owner chooses.
The original brass escutcheon and retaining hooks remain intact at either end, and the lid opens onto a green velvet-lined interior with a matching felt base, empty of whatever set it originally held but well suited to jewellery, watches, fountain pens, or correspondence instead. The blank cartouche is worth noting on its own; a case that's never been personalised leaves the decision entirely up to whoever buys it next, rather than carrying someone else's initials into a new home.
Condition notes
The case remains in excellent antique condition with a good colour throughout. It displays the expected signs of age, including light surface scratches, small nibbles and minor impressions to the wood, together with a small age-related shrinkage crack to one corner of the lid. These are all cosmetic only and do not detract from its appearance or functionality, instead reflecting more than a century of careful use.
