Thistle-form decanters have a clever bit of visual and structural design behind them. The bulbous, inverted thistle shape echoes Scotland's national symbol directly while also giving the glass a wider base for stability. This one carries the reference through multiple layers of cutting: hob nail work across the shoulder, a slice-cut neck, a spiral facet cut stopper, and a star cut base, each technique adding a different kind of light-catching texture rather than repeating the same pattern throughout.
The two cordial glasses continue the theme. Their bulbous lower bowls are faceted to resemble a thistle bract, the fluted middle sections suggest an unopened bloom, and etched thistle motifs finish the design across the flared bowl above. The silver plated stand pulls the whole set together, its fluted openwork handle topped with ball decoration, engraved with a flowering thistle pattern, and raised on four cast thistle feet, so the botanical reference runs consistently through decanter, glasses and stand alike rather than being confined to one piece.
Condition notes
Very good antique condition. Wear to silvering on the stand; stopper has repairs to neck, large sideways chip to top and small chip to base; fleabites to base of decanter.
