A late Victorian jewellery or lady's work box, constructed on a solid mahogany carcass and veneered throughout in richly figured burr walnut, with matching walnut crossbanding and fine boxwood stringing. A mahogany carcass beneath finely matched decorative veneers is characteristic of quality Victorian cabinetmaking, pairing structural stability with careful craftsmanship.
The restrained, architectural design lets the timbers take centre stage. The swirling burr walnut veneers carry real natural figure, framed by contrasting walnut crossbanding and delicate boxwood stringing, while the lid is bookmatched to bring out the symmetry of the grain. Raised on its original shaped feet and fitted with an inset escutcheon.
The interior is lined in soft crushed velvet, suiting it equally to jewellery, sewing accessories, keepsakes or display.
With its clean geometric form and well-figured veneers, this is a decorative piece that sits comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors, particularly English Country House, Art Deco and Hollywood Regency inspired settings.
Condition notes
Very good antique condition. The veneers retain a good colour and patina. There are a few stable age-related veneer shrinkage lines, a small chip to one rear corner, and light surface wear and scuffs consistent with over 140 years of careful use. One foot shows evidence of an old, well-aged glue repair, which remains stable. The interior lining presents well overall, with no major losses.
