The "Teplitz Wien" mark on the base is a bit of a puzzle if you take it literally, since Teplitz was a spa town in Bohemia, nowhere near Vienna, and the two names sitting together on one stamp has more to do with branding than geography. Austrian and Bohemian potteries of the period often traded on the Vienna name regardless of where the piece was actually thrown, since "Wien" carried the prestige of the imperial capital's porcelain tradition even when the workshop itself was several hundred miles away.
This figure shows a boy set among flowers, the kind of unhurried genre subject Teplitz workshops turned out by the hundred through the 1890's, aimed squarely at the growing middle-class market for affordable decorative porcelain rather than at aristocratic collectors. The base carries the Teplitz Wien mark alongside the letter W and the model number 1201, enough to place the piece within the wider Teplitz district output, even without a confirmed individual maker.
