Shell cameo carving relies on a happy accident of nature — certain shells grow in layers of contrasting colour, and a skilled carver works through the pale top layer to reveal the warmer ground colour beneath, building a raised image rather than adding material to a flat surface. This one depicts a woman in profile, styled after Greek or Roman classical portraiture, with genuinely fine detail in the eye, lips and hair — the kind of carving that separates a well-made cameo from a merely serviceable one, since those features are exactly where a lesser carver's skill tends to show its limits.
The 15ct yellow gold frame is decorated with twisted rope detailing, a border style common enough across Victorian jewellery that it barely needs explaining, but done well here without overwhelming the carving it surrounds. On the reverse, a C-clasp pin and a small hook allow the piece to be worn either as a standalone brooch or secured to a chain, which is a nice bit of flexibility for something otherwise fairly fixed in its Victorian classical styling.

Great antique condition. Small hairline crack on reverse of shell; the rim of the mount is a bit uneven due to the handmade nature of the brooch.
