Sitzendorf's factory in Thuringia made its name on precisely this kind of subject, small domestic figures pulled from rural and pastoral life rather than the mythological or aristocratic scenes favoured by the grander German houses. This one shows a young woman seated at a spinning wheel, a scene that would have read as nostalgic even when it was new, since by the late 1800's hand-spinning had already been mostly displaced by industrial mills, and figures like this sold partly on the appeal of a trade that was disappearing even as the porcelain version of it was being made.
The piece dates to the late nineteenth century and sits comfortably alongside other European porcelain figures from Dresden, Meissen and the wider Thuringian region, the sort of grouping that tends to grow shelf by shelf rather than all at once.
