About this piece

This bronze phoenix stands on a square column, cast in the distinctive style associated with the Sanxingdui bronzes of ancient Sichuan — angular, stylised birds that remain some of the more instantly recognisable forms in early Chinese bronze work. The original Sanxingdui finds date back to the Shang dynasty, roughly 1600–1045 BC, and pieces like this one continue that visual language in a smaller, more decorative form.

There's a directness to the design that comes through even at this scale — the bird reads clearly despite the geometric simplification, which is very much the point of the style it draws from. A good piece for anyone drawn to early Chinese form language without needing the archaeology to go with it.

Condition notes

Very good vintage condition. Tarnishing and corrosion to bronze appropriate to age.
