Theodore Schoop worked as a sculptor for the Bernard Bloch porcelain studios during a period when Austro-Hungarian factories were absorbing Art Nouveau's organic sensibility into figural subjects that were, at heart, still fairly traditional: peasant couples, pastoral labour, the same genre scenes German and Austrian workshops had leaned on for a century, but modelled with the movement's newer fluidity. This pair shows exactly that overlap. The woman, dressed in eighteenth-century style costume, scatters seed with one hand while gathering her skirt into an improvised pouch with the other, and her companion rests against a spade beside her, both set on naturalistic bases finished with gilt highlights.
Each figure carries Schoop's impressed signature along with individual design numbers, 7812 for the woman and 7813 for the man, plus separate secondary numbers (6 and 2 respectively), the kind of detailed mark-keeping that makes attributing and dating pieces like this considerably more straightforward than most unmarked Continental figural work. The pair is dated to between 1892 and 1904, placing it within the working years Schoop and Bloch's studio overlapped, and a couple this specifically marked and matched is the harder thing to find intact than either figure would be alone.
