Renaissance dolphins get depicted with a strange, almost dragon-like character that modern viewers don't expect. Sixteenth and seventeenth century artists drew on classical sources rather than actual marine biology, giving dolphins scaled bodies, sharp teeth and coiled tails closer to sea monsters than anything you'd find swimming today. This fish server set brings that older visual tradition back for a Victorian audience, embossing shells and those same fantastical dolphin-monsters across the sterling silver handles of both fork and knife.
The knife's blade is silver plate, pierced and engraved with Poseidon riding one of the creatures, turning a functional serving piece into a genuine narrative scene. Fish servers as a category only really became common once Victorian dining etiquette demanded specific cutlery for specific courses, and a set this heavily decorated suggests it was made to be noticed at the table rather than simply used and put away.
