Mason's built its reputation on ironstone strong enough for daily use and decorative enough to sit on a sideboard between meals, and this punch bowl, dating from the early 19th century, leans hard into the second half of that promise. It's a substantial piece, painted in the India Grasshopper pattern, one of the firm's documented early chinoiserie designs, showing a vase of peonies among rockwork, a crane picking its way through the garden, and a small fruit basket balanced on a table, all rendered in the confident, slightly overloaded manner that made these patterns so recognisable at a glance.
The palette is what makes the piece: a black transfer-printed outline filled in by hand with cobalt, coral orange, sage green and touches of gilt, no two brushstrokes quite matching the next. The interior rim carries a border of formal florets and ruyi-head motifs in the same palette, framing whatever the bowl happened to be holding, which was rarely, if ever, actual punch. Condition notes
Antique condition, with wear consistent with genuine age and use. The bowl has an old, professionally repaired crack with associated restoration, visible on close inspection. There is surface scratching and some wear to the painted and enamelled decoration, along with minor losses and imperfections around the rim, all in keeping with a well-loved piece of this age.
