Czechoslovakia had a genuinely strong costume jewellery industry through the early-to-mid 20th century, producing gilt brass and glass pieces that borrowed liberally from earlier design movements without pretending to be anything other than what they were — affordable, well-made statement jewellery rather than fine goldsmith work. This brooch leans into Art Nouveau's love of layered, organic filigree, the gilt brass built up in several distinct layers to give real depth and texture rather than sitting flat against the skin.
At the centre, an oval cabochon of blue glass stands in for a genuine gemstone, ringed with smaller blue glass stones and imitation pearls along the edges — a combination that reads as considered rather than a compromise, since costume jewellery of this period was rarely trying to fool anyone into thinking the materials were precious. Scale does a lot of the work here too: this is a large, properly substantial brooch, built to be noticed rather than to hide quietly on a lapel.
