Josef Kuba's Karlsbad workshop built its output around exactly this kind of decorative scene: a rich cobalt ground, a scalloped footed bowl, and a courting couple rendered in the style of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the eighteenth-century French painter whose romantic, slightly theatrical garden scenes became a favoured decorative shorthand for European porcelain and glass workshops well into the twentieth century. The scene here follows that tradition closely, gold work picking out the detail against the deep blue background rather than competing with it.
Made in Karlsbad, Bohemia, and dated to between 1930 and 1945, the piece falls within a turbulent stretch for the region, the years leading up to and through the Second World War, during which much of the area's traditional glass and porcelain production was disrupted or halted entirely. A piece surviving cleanly from that specific window carries a bit more weight for it, a decorative object that outlasted a genuinely difficult period for the industry that made it.
