About this piece
Natural, untreated turquoise is genuinely harder to source than most people realise — much of what circulates in the trade today has been stabilised or dyed to even out colour that occurs, in its raw state, with real variation piece to piece. This necklace is strung with large knotted beads in a bluish-green shade that reads as properly natural rather than uniform, the kind of colour depth that's difficult to fake convincingly.
The gourd-shaped pendant at the centre carries four hanging tassels finished with jade beads, a combination that leans into a long tradition in East and Central Asian jewellery of pairing turquoise with jade — two stones that have carried talismanic weight in their respective cultures for centuries, often for overlapping reasons (protection, good fortune, status). Knotting between each bead isn't just decorative either; it keeps the beads from grinding against one another and gives the whole strand a bit of give rather than sitting rigid.
