Lost wax casting lets a sculptor capture fine detail that mould-based casting techniques struggle to match, and this amphora shows that precision throughout: grapevines laden with fruit wind around the entire body, creating a dense decorative framework that never quite repeats itself from one section to the next. At the centre, a group of children plays in a sunlit field, some seated on the grass eating grapes, others tumbling over each other in play, a pastoral scene rendered with real narrative energy rather than static posing.
The patination does a lot of work here too. Deep green tones sit against high-gloss areas, creating contrast and shadow that catches the eye differently depending on the angle it's viewed from, a deliberate finishing technique rather than something that happened by accident over time. The amphora rests on a plain bronze base, kept deliberately understated so it doesn't compete with the level of detail above it.
Condition notes
Excellent antique condition. The bronze exhibits a well-developed patina that enhances its Art Nouveau character. There are no significant signs of wear or repair, and the piece remains structurally sound and visually compelling.
