Kutch silverwork takes its name from the Kutch region of Gujarat, where local silversmiths developed a densely embossed decorative style that became one of the most recognisable regional traditions within Colonial Indian silver. This bowl carries that style across its entire surface, scrolling foliage and flowers worked in relief with no plain ground left untouched, a technique that takes considerable patience given how much of the surface has to be raised by hand from the reverse before any finishing detail is added.
The baluster body stands on three feet rather than a single pedestal, and a fluted rim finishes the top edge, adding one more layer of texture to a piece that's already dense with pattern. Kutch silver reached a real peak of popularity through the Colonial period, both with Indian buyers and British ones stationed in India who wanted a genuinely local decorative style rather than an imported one.
