About this piece

This pair leans into Victorian Revival taste, made well after the actual Victorian period had ended but drawing directly on its decorative language: scalloped bases, moulded foliate and scroll relief, and S-scroll handles, all trimmed with gilt. Floral bouquets are painted across the candle holders themselves, a fuller decorative treatment than a lot of chambersticks bother with, given how small and functional the form usually is.

Hammersley and Co produced these as part of their tea and tableware line under the Royal Worcester and Spode Group, which puts them in good company production-wise, even if chambersticks themselves are a slightly overlooked category compared to teacups and dinner services. Their small scale means they work just as well as an unusual pair of candlesticks at the dinner table as they do in their originally intended bedroom or hallway role.

Condition notes

Excellent condition. Tiny chip to the underside of one chamberstick; small firing defect to one sconce.
