James Hadley set up his own factory after leaving Royal Worcester, and pieces bearing the Hadley's Worcester mark, rather than Royal Worcester itself, come from that later, independent chapter of his career rather than his earlier decades as the bigger factory's chief modeller. This jardinière shows the faience side of his output: moulded panels in deep teal relief, each framed with peach and ochre architectural detail and holding a hand-painted sepia floral spray against a shaded ground, the kind of layered, confidently coloured decoration Hadley's independent workshop leaned into.
The shaped feet and raised borders give the piece real architectural presence for its size, restrained enough to sit comfortably in a cabinet but sturdy enough not to read as a delicate trinket. It's marked to the base "Hadley's Worcester England Faience," pattern 197/2, and a plant pot with this much going on rather undersells its actual job, which is understandable, since most jardinières are designed to disappear behind whatever's growing out of them, and this one clearly wasn't.
Condition notes
Excellent antique condition overall. There is minor wear to the raised gilt decoration, consistent with age. No cracks or repairs. The interior is clean, and the colours remain strong throughout.
