Sitzendorf leaned on Georgian pastoral subjects for decades after the actual Georgian era ended, an idealised rustic scene, comfortable and a little wistful, that kept selling long after the fashions it depicted had gone out of use. This figure sticks close to the formula. A young peasant girl holds a tambourine, a sheep settled at her feet, standing against a moulded base worked with floral bouquets, scrolls and gilt, backed by a tree trunk support that keeps the figure stable while reading as part of the pastoral scenery.
The palette leans heavily on emerald green and pale yellow, with the skirt hand-painted in blue, purple and orange florals against the more restrained ruffled collar and headscarf, a fair amount of colour packed into a single figure without it tipping into clutter. Made in Thuringia and dated to the 1910's, the piece belongs to the domestic, pastoral genre-figure tradition Sitzendorf built its reputation on, one that stayed decades removed from the period it depicts, which was always rather the point.
