About this piece

By the 1930's, the Georgian-costume pair had become one of German porcelain's most durable formulas, a subject so reliably popular that factories kept producing it for the better part of a century after the actual Georgian period ended. This pair follows that pattern closely: a dandy leaning against a tree stump, his companion holding a large yellow fan, both worked in bright red, pink and blue enamel and set on matching scalloped, gilded bases.

The colour palette here runs bolder than the softer, more pastel-leaning Georgian pairs typical of the earlier decades, which fits with the piece's later date; German decorative porcelain through the 1920's and 30's tended toward brighter, more saturated enamelling generally, a shift that shows up clearly in a pair like this even while the subject matter itself stayed firmly rooted in the previous century's fashions.

Condition notes

Great vintage condition. Tiny nibbles to the top of the lady's fan.
