Blue and white transferware series depicting scenes from the Ottoman Empire had real appeal in early 19th century Britain, tied to a broader public fascination with the East that also fed into Egyptian and Chinoiserie revival trends of the same period. This plate carries the "Tchiurluk" pattern, part of that Ottoman Empire series, the titled view printed in blue at the centre and framed by the series' typical border of flowers, scrolls and incense burners.
The service is attributed to John and William Ridgway, whose Cauldon Place works in Stoke-on-Trent operated through roughly this period, producing printed wares alongside the finer porcelain the firm is often better remembered for. Series like this worked almost like a set of illustrated postcards for a household that would never actually travel to see the places depicted, each plate offering a different named view within the same consistent decorative border.
