Bright cutting reached real technical heights by the late 18th century, and these tongs show that off well. The geometric and floral pattern engraved across the surface is genuinely unusual, more angular and structured than the flowing botanical designs more typical of the period, giving the whole piece a slightly different character to most George III silver you'd come across.
They're large and properly weighty in the hand, made by George Hindmarsh and assayed for London in 1791. Substantial sugar tongs like this were as much about making an impression at the table as they were about practical use, and the density of the engraving here suggests the maker knew exactly what he was doing on that front.

Very good antique condition. One of the tips is slightly bent.
