About this piece

Folding fruit knives were a practical bit of Edwardian personal kit, small enough to carry but proper enough to use at the table, the mother-of-pearl handle here chosen specifically for the way it catches light. The nacre has a deep, rich lustre to it, and the surface is engraved with flowers, scrolls and leaves in an Art Nouveau style that suits the material's natural shimmer better than a plainer handle would.

At the centre of the handle sits a cartouche inscribed "Amy," a small personal detail that turns an otherwise anonymous piece of silverware into something with a specific owner attached to it, even if her story is lost now. Made by William Needham, 1907.

Condition notes

Good antique condition, no damage to the mother of pearl. There are nicks along the blade and the very tip is dented and has tiny loss.
