Micro mosaic work took the grand tradition of Roman and Florentine mosaic and shrank it down to a scale that's genuinely difficult to comprehend until you've seen one in person — thousands of individual glass tesserae, some barely a millimetre across, set by hand into a design small enough to sit on a lapel. This brooch works entirely in blue tones, a floral bouquet filling the centre with a ring of small stars set around the border, the kind of density of detail that rewards a magnifying glass over a glance.
Italian micro mosaic jewellery reached real heights of popularity with 19th century Grand Tour travellers, who brought pieces like this home as souvenirs of Rome and Florence, and production continued well into the early 20th century as demand held steady. The round body is finished with a twisted rope border, and the reverse carries a C-clasp, a fastening style consistent with the period and useful for confirming the piece hasn't been altered or remounted since it was made.
