About this piece
Most safety pins on brooches were steel, chosen for strength over show, but Cropp & Farr didn't bother with the compromise here — the entire brooch, pin included, is worked in gold, right down to a handmade lever safety catch rather than a mass-produced fitting. It's a small extravagance, easy to miss until you turn the piece over and realise even the hidden hardware got the same attention as the front.
The design itself is a round floral cluster, six brilliant-cut sapphires clustered at the centre and nine seed pearls set against splayed leaf fronds radiating outward, worked in 9ct yellow gold. It's fully assayed for Birmingham, 1965, and made by Cropp & Farr, giving it a solid, dateable pedigree rather than a stylistic guess — sapphire and pearl combinations were a popular, slightly less expected alternative to diamonds through the mid-20th century, cooler in tone and a bit more distinctive for it.
