This double brush pot is carved from soapstone mottled through yellow and black, the two colours worked into the design rather than fought against — the darker passages picked out for shadow and fur, the paler stone left for whatever needed to catch the light. The scene is a small piece of narrative rather than pure ornament: a monkey holds a piece of fruit while a bird pecks at it, the kind of animal pairing that turns up across Chinese decorative arts as much for its charm as for any deeper symbolism.
Soapstone's softness made it a favourite material for exactly this sort of detailed figural carving, easy enough to work finely but still durable enough to survive a century of handling. Brush pots themselves sat on most scholars' desks as a matter of course, though a double form carved this elaborately was clearly made to be looked at as much as used.
Condition notes
Good antique condition. Sideways chip to the reverse; some minor nicks and chips commensurate with age; one pot has small chips to rim; surface crack to body and small hole inside.
