About this piece

This brush washer takes a more playful approach than most — a monkey sits eating fruit while a dog appears mid-attempt to climb into the pot itself, blurring the line between decoration and the object's actual function in a way that most carved brush washers don't bother with. The stone runs pale green through black, giving the carver two distinct tones to separate the figures from their setting.

Dogs are a less common subject in Chinese soapstone carving than monkeys, birds, or the usual scholarly motifs, which makes the pairing here a bit of a departure from what turns up most often on pieces like this. It's a small scene with real character, carved by someone who clearly wasn't taking the subject too seriously.

Condition notes

Very good antique condition. Some small nicks commensurate with age; internal hairline crack to base.
