About this piece
This piece combines a brush washer and brush pot in a single carved form, a practical pairing that saved desk space while still leaving plenty of surface for decoration. A monkey feeds a bird on one side, another bird plucks at fruit nearby, and the pink and grey soapstone gives the carver a natural way to separate figure from ground without relying on incised outlines alone. The pot section carries an ornate fish motif worked into the stone, while the washer bears incised Chinese characters, adding a documentary element that pure figural carving usually doesn't.
Combined forms like this ask a carver to balance two different functions within one composition, and the range of motifs here — animals, fish, script — suggests someone working confidently across several decorative registers rather than repeating a single formula.
Condition notes
Very good antique condition. Chip to pot rim; minor nicks commensurate with age.
