About this piece
This combined washer and pot is carved from a warm reddish brown soapstone, the surface given over to a single whimsical scene — one monkey, one bird, worked with a lightness of touch that keeps the piece feeling more like a sketch caught in stone than a formal composition. The bowl carries its own incised floral border, a quieter counterpoint to the figural carving above it.
Where some combined pieces pile on multiple animals and motifs, this one keeps things simple, and there's something to be said for restraint — a single figure well carved often holds attention longer than a crowded scene. It's a good fit for anyone drawn to the form and technique of Republic-era soapstone without wanting the busiest example of it.
Condition notes
Good antique condition. Surface crack to the front of the brush pot and a chip along the edge on reverse; minor nicks commensurate with age.
