About this piece

This porcelain Buddha sits with the wide, unmistakable smile that gives the figure its common name, prayer beads held loosely in hand. The robes are painted in famille rose enamels, pink joined by pale teals and yellows across a surface busy with hand-painted flowers, medallions, and repeating motifs — enough decorative detail to hold attention on its own, even before you get to the expression.

Smiling Buddha figures occupy a slightly different register from the meditating forms more familiar in Buddhist art, associated instead with good fortune, abundance, and a kind of contentment that translates easily regardless of who's looking at it on a shelf. The famille rose palette places this firmly within a decorative tradition that Chinese porcelain workshops carried well into the twentieth century, refined by then into something closer to a specialty than an innovation.
