About this piece

This large tianqiuping vase takes its name from its planet-like form — a broad mouth, straight neck, and full round body sitting on a flat, footless base that's slightly countersunk rather than raised. Two opposing cartouches carry warriors on horseback in polychrome famille rose enamel, figures caught mid-motion rather than posed, while the rest of the body is given over to white lotus flowers scrolling against a green ground, a quieter backdrop that gives the warrior scenes somewhere to stand out from.

Famille rose enamelling, with its characteristic opaque pink derived from colloidal gold, remained a mainstay of Chinese decorative porcelain through the Republic period, and this piece shows the technique at a genuinely substantial scale, built to command a room rather than sit quietly on a shelf.

Condition notes

Excellent vintage condition. Some light surface scuffing to enamel.
