Rose-cut diamonds had largely fallen out of high fashion by the Edwardian era, elbowed aside by the brighter, more light-hungry old and cushion cuts — which makes their survival here, alongside old-cut stones, a small window into how jewellers of the period mixed cuts pragmatically rather than treating them as strictly interchangeable. Each earring centres on an old-cut diamond ringed by five rose-cut stones, with three more worked into the trefoil tops above, eighteen diamonds in total across the pair, totalling roughly 2.10 carats.
The mounts are silver with a yellow gold wash, a combination chosen for the same reason it turns up throughout fine Edwardian diamond work — silver flatters pale stones, gold protects the skin from tarnish — and the latch-back fastenings are original to the period rather than a later replacement. The earrings come in a fitted case from Carrington & Co, a well-regarded name among London jewellers, though the case itself postdates the earrings, so treat it as a handsome later addition rather than part of the original commission.
