Ernst Wahliss's Turn-Vienna workshop had a habit of updating much older visual conventions rather than discarding them, and this figure is a clean example of that instinct at work. This one represents Geography in the expected way, book in hand, resting against a globe, but rendered in the flowing lines and bisque finish that place it firmly at the turn of the century rather than in straight revival territory.
The gilt detailing is worked with real precision, picking out edges and accents against the matte bisque body rather than covering broad areas, typical of Wahliss's approach: restraint in the glazing choice, more confidence in the gilding. Allegorical figures like this tend to be collected as part of a themed set representing several disciplines, so a Geography figure often ends up being the piece that starts a grouping rather than completes one.
