This bowl uses gold on cobalt blue rather than the more common white-and-blue palette of most Chinoiserie decoration, giving it a real richness that suits its Art Deco context. The scene is properly detailed: a pagoda rises above a lake, sampan boats and a bridge worked in below, a large flowering tree, and the moon rising in the distance, all painted in gold against the mottled blue ground.
The oblong, fluted body sits on a pedestal base with two relief-moulded, gilded handles, and the rim is trimmed with a geometric and floral border, punctuated by medallions depicting chrysanthemum flowers. Made by A. G. Harley Jones, model 5008, and marked with the gold circular Wilton Ware stamp to the base, it's a solid example of how 1920's decorative pottery leaned into Orientalist themes as part of the wider Art Deco aesthetic.
Condition notes
Great antique condition. Some light wear to gilding commensurate with age; one spot where the underglaze blue is pale.
