Roman Plewkiewicz & Co worked out of Warsaw in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing decorative metalware for a market that still had real appetite for Louis XVI revival design decades after the actual style had gone out of fashion in France. This basket carries that revival language in full: ribbon-tied floral and fruit swags run across the openwork mount, framed by pierced trellis panels, a combination that leans into Rococo Revival exuberance while keeping the more restrained Neoclassical structure underneath.
Four scrolling rocaille feet support the piece, and a beaded swing handle sits on top, giving the basket real presence whether it's being carried to the table or left standing on it. The removable liner is sapphire blue glass with a scalloped rim, a genuinely striking contrast against the silvered mount, and one that also makes practical sense: swap the liner out and the basket serves equally well for bonbons, bread, or nothing at all beyond looking good on a sideboard.
Condition notes
Good antique condition. Some light surface wear to the silver plating consistent with age and use. The sapphire blue glass liner has a long stable crack with small chips at either end. The basket has a slight wobble when placed on a flat surface but remains stable when displayed. Presents beautifully.
