Limoges enamelling is one of those techniques where the difficulty is entirely invisible in the finished object — each colour needs its own trip through the kiln, sometimes a dozen firings or more, with every layer risking cracking or ruining the work underneath it. Whoever "GH" was, they clearly had the patience for it: the portrait here is a courtly lady in profile, dressed in 18th century costume, luminous blues against a black enamel ground, her gown picked out with pink roses and the kind of restrained gilding that makes you wonder how many failed attempts came before this one survived the kiln intact.
Victorian taste had a genuine soft spot for exactly this kind of thing — costume portraits looking back a century, borrowed nostalgia dressed up as jewellery — and the mount plays along nicely, a copper and brass swivel frame engraved with beading and a twisted rope border, letting the portrait turn rather than sitting fixed and staring. The reverse carries a C-clasp, a style phased out by the 1910's, plus the original safety chain, both handy for placing the piece in time even without a hallmark to lean on. It's the sort of brooch that rewards being picked up and turned in the hand rather than only glanced at from across a room.

Very good antique condition. Small chip to base of portrait; the top and bottom of the inner frame are a bit depressed; small chip to enamel on reverse; tiny dings to frame.
