About this piece
Vienna bronze workshops built a real reputation through the late 19th and early 20th centuries for exactly this kind of naturalistic animal casting, favouring accurate, closely observed detail over the more stylised, decorative approach other European bronze centres tended toward. This owl fits that tradition well, perched on a large log with feather detail worked carefully enough to distinguish individual plumage patterns rather than reading as a general textured surface.
The eyes are set with green and black glass rather than left as plain cast bronze, a technique that adds real presence to the piece and was fairly standard practice among Austrian workshops producing wildlife bronzes at this level of quality. Long-eared owls specifically are a slightly less common subject than the more frequently sculpted barn or eagle owls, which makes this a bit of an unusual choice of species for a piece from this period.
