The beehive mark that gives "Royal Vienna" porcelain its name outlived the factory that first used it by decades. The original Vienna Porcelain Manufactory shut its doors in 1864, but the mark itself stayed in circulation, picked up by a run of later Austrian and Bohemian workshops keen to trade on the associations of the imperial name, which is why so much of what's sold as "Royal Vienna" today actually dates to the back half of the century rather than to the manufactory's own working years.
This figure shows a British redcoat officer bidding farewell to his sweetheart, one hand resting against her cheek in the kind of tender, slightly theatrical gesture that Victorian-era decorative porcelain leaned on heavily, a small frozen melodrama meant to be read at a glance. The modelling and hand-painting are detailed enough to hold up to that kind of close reading, and the piece carries the Viennese beehive mark on its base, tying it to that wider later-century tradition rather than to the original eighteenth-century factory.
