About this piece

Rauenstein was one of the older German porcelain factories, established in the 18th century in Thuringia, and this bowl shows the firm still working comfortably within Chinoiserie decoration well into the 19th century. Cream scrolls sit against a red ground, a bold colour choice for a Chinoiserie piece, most of which lean toward blue and white or softer pastel palettes rather than this kind of saturated contrast.

The five-sided form itself is a bit unusual, most bowls of this type stick to a round or oval shape, so the faceted body gives the piece a slightly architectural quality beyond the decoration alone. Gilding runs across the whole surface in a dotted pattern, adding texture on top of the painted scrollwork rather than being confined to a plain border.

Condition notes

Excellent antique condition. Light wear to gilt along the rim appropriate for age.
