About this piece
KPM produced a whole strand of these costume portraits through the 19th century, painting sitters in fashions from a century or more earlier rather than dressing them in contemporary style. This wasn't meant as historical accuracy so much as a kind of decorative fantasy, cabinet portraits designed to look elegant and slightly aristocratic rather than to depict anyone specific. This dish follows exactly that convention: a lady shown in profile, in a large feathered hat styled after Louis XIV or Restoration dress, painted against a dark ground that throws the paler tones of her face and costume into contrast.
Condition notes
Great antique condition, no chips or cracks. Scuffing to rim and some tiny scuffed spots inside.
