About this piece

This dish takes an interesting costume reference: the sitter wears a large plumed beret styled after Louis XIV or Restoration fashion, a deliberately historical costume choice rather than contemporary dress. KPM painters often worked from earlier portraiture and costume prints for exactly this kind of piece, giving 19th century buyers a taste of aristocratic French fashion filtered through German porcelain painting.

The background is gilded, catching light around the figure rather than letting her sit against a flat, receding backdrop, and it changes the whole feel of the portrait compared to a plainer ground.

Condition notes

Very good antique condition, no chips or cracks. Scuffing to gilt commensurate with age.
