Victorian Neoclassical 6-sided silver-plated biscuit barrel on cast feet with egg-and-dart trim
Wonderfully ornate Victorian silver-plated hexagonal biscuit barrel with an inbuilt tray. The six-sided panelled body is resting on a base that is trimmed with an oversized egg-and-dart border and raised on four cast feet of openwork scrolling design.
Five of the panels are decorated in high-relief with medallions of scrolling foliage that are interspersed with Greek columns in beautiful Neoclassical design. The 6th medallion is vacant, forming a cartouche for personalised engraving. The top of the body is also decorated with an egg-and-dart border and topped with an ornate finial in the form of overlapping leaves.
Simply stunning box that is large enough not only to be used as a cookie jar, but as any other decorative container.
Made in Sheffield, England, c. 1890's
945 g
18 cm tall to handle
22 x 16.5 cm across the base
