1820's Spode porcelain Famille rose creamware large barrel scent jar, pattern 3184

£420.00

Early Josiah Spode fine pearlware potpourri / scent jar hand-painted with a polychrome "Famille Rose" Chinoiserie design of peony flowers with ship borders. Large barrel-shaped body with two curving handles and a flat interior lid. The pearlware body has wonderful over-glaze enamel colours of reddish-pink, orange, blue and green. The design is outlined, then coloured in by an enameller.

Made by Spode, England, c. 1820’s.

Black printed "SPODE" mark to base, pattern 3184 – “Famille Rose” or “Peony pattern with ship border".

The border is known as “ship“. The name “ship“ is derived from Spode pattern 3067. The border to that design features a ship in a Chinese harbour, utilising the same design. In fact, the design was one that Spode used with over 50 different central patterns including chinoiserie and floral groups.

1362 g
19.5 cm tall to rim
20.5 cm tall to handles
12 cm diameter across the top
21.5 cm across widest point

Good antique condition. Some small losses to enamelling; crack to lid; signs of repair to handles and to inner rim; the outer lid is absent.
