A truly special pair of antique French faience urns, beautifully attributed to the renowned Veuve Perrin workshop in Marseille, and dating to the 18th century. Each vase is a lively celebration of craftsmanship, hand-painted in vibrant polychrome enamels with enchanting pastoral scenes — think dreamy countryside moments, captured in deep blues, sunny yellows, rose pinks, fresh greens, and warm earthy browns. These joyful colours are a signature of Veuve Perrin’s finest work.
The sculptural quality of the urns is heightened by bold, gilded ram’s head handles that bring a touch of classical grandeur. Their square bases are just as carefully decorated, with delicate floral bouquets framed by stylised ribbon borders, highlighted with fine gilded detailing. A lovely pierced gallery encircles the upper section, adding another layer of visual richness and technical skill.
Both urns are securely mounted to their bases with metal rods and bolts. They retain a slight rotational movement, a charming feature of their original construction — although this could easily be tightened underneath if preferred.
Similar pieces by Veuve Perrin are held in important museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (object numbers 50.211.72a, b, .73a, b). Whether placed on a mantel, console table, or as a statement centrepiece, these urns bring a breath of 18th-century French elegance into any interior. Perfect for collectors of fine faience, Rococo decorative arts, or anyone looking to add a truly special piece to their home.
Combined weight: Approximately 1300 g
Height (each): 19.5 cm / 7.68″
Width across handles: 14 cm / 5.51″
Depth: 10 cm / 3.94″
Both urns are in very good antique condition. The painting, enamelling, and gilding are remarkably well preserved, with only light wear consistent with careful handling over time. One urn has a chip to the gilded ram’s horn, revealing a little of the faience beneath, and a barely noticeable enamel flake on the forehead of the same ram’s head. Minor natural glaze crazing and tiny firing marks, typical of 18th-century faience, add to their authenticity and charm. The urns can still rotate slightly on their mounts, but this could easily be stabilised if desired.
